Funky Friday Vol. 9
I don't know about you but once the heat hits 3 digits, the novelty of summer seems to diminish for me and I need to avoid the sun like the plague. But I hope as the 4th is approaching everyone is flocking to a beach or a lake this weekend to enjoy the way our independence was meant to be enjoyed: drinking on the water (if it was safe to swim around the East River you know I would be there). But since I can't make my way up the coast into Maine this until Tuesday, I made sure to keep myself fully equipped with PBR's in the fridge to fend off the heat before heading to see RAC at the Brooklyn Bowl. So with that said, I figured why not start out with a Felix Da Housecat's great new edit of a Remix Artist Collective recent EP single to start off? Alongside RAC and Felix Da Housecat, we got some great new work from some exciting names for you tonight. So loosen the tie (it's Friday for christ sakes) and enjoy what is surely to be a great weekend:
Spinning some Felix Da Housecat is nearly always a sure shot to get people in a good mood. This recent remix of RAC's most recent record,"Hollywood". It's a pretty easy going remix but it's perfect for poolside or beach side when you're just in the mood to rage:
Another big fish in the dance music pond has gotta be Oliver right now. Oliver, so hot right now, Oliver. These two dudes have been on a producing and remixing frenzy and they are not to be confused with Oliver Twizt:
Speaking of big names, I am becoming sure that Fire Flowerz will eventually become real relevant in the EDM game in general as they have already made a strong niche within the Nu-Disco and the Funky House world. This most recent track "Sugar" is a sweet one (a happy-good sweet as opposed to say mortal obesity):
This next Sneaky Sound System remix by Plastic Plates is another feel good disco track built for afternoons outside:
Country Club is another up and coming name you should be sure to put on your radar:

Mixtape Thursday: Eric Prydz, Dillon Francis
One of them was Deadmau5 featured in the latest issue of Rolling Stones magazine. Great exposure for the EDM scene. Click here for the article and his video interview. There have been some debate over what he said in his interview and in a post (Title: we all hit play.) on his tumblr but in his response to the feedback he received from the community (Title: look ma! no swear words! :D), I believe he explained himself very well and still managed to get his message across. Kudos to him. Personally, I don't agree with his "we all hit play" post but of course, everyone's post or opinion should be accepted with an open mind.
I believe there is a great separation and difference in DJs who do it for their love and passion in the music and the DJs who are out there to, as Deadmau5 puts it, "cash in." DJing is an art and I think with it's current state, DJing should be traced back to it's roots: Music. I can't tell you specifically what to listen to and what not to listen to, but really, I beg of you to try something new each day. Embrace the other genres and different styles of music that are at reach with just a click of a mouse. Don't follow suit, but stray away from the commercial route that everyone is on. It's not a bad thing to stand out. Lead your friends in to a musical journey of discovery. That last line sounded cheesy but that's how desperate I am to get my message across.
Here's a good article/post/write-up I'd like you to read: Press Play? Hit Start
The writer talks about her the current state of the EDM world and her experience/journey in it. It's another perspective you can look at, don't agree with it just because I told you to read it. Read both Deadmau5's posts and this other post, you're old enough to decide on your own. I believe you'll log off your computer more aware of what is going on with EDM and get more bang out of your buck the next time you drop those Benjamins for your next EDM festival.
So enough of talk, let's get on to what we are here for: Music. Double dose for the week. Two mixes with genres on opposite sides of the spectrum.
On the left side, we have Eric Prydz. "The man & the legend," that's what Avicii called him on his previous Le7els radio show (SiriusXM). Famous for his progressive house prowess, this mix has him on the decks for BBC Radio 1's Hackney Weekend. With no disappointments, 45 minutes of epic progression in to the journey of house music.
On the right side, we have Dillion Francis. This mix features the grimier (is that even a word?), dirtier, bouncier, crazier... side of electronic music. Get ready for some of that moombahton, trap, electro, (insert whatever genre out there) served hot and right in your face. Remember, embrace the other genres. You won't regret it.
Have a great weekend, enjoy.

Wobble Wednesday Vol. 6
With our main wobble man Evan out due being held captive by the corporate 9-5 grind, I have taken the reins to provide you all with your much desired deep bass madness. We have some great material for you this week and I am glad to be taking over this week as I discovered myself at Spring Awakening the other weekend being quite the dub-head seeing some key acts such as Kill The Noise, Downlink, Datsik, Skrillex, and Flux Pavillion. Anyways, enough about me, this is about you, so lets get to the bass and help you guys get through the hump of the work week (plus a little surprise at the end).
This first track has been getting been getting abused on my iPod and I don't mind it at all. Figure with his latest single, "What Do You Need" takes as he describes, a spin off of the Daft Punk classic, "Rollin and Scratchin". When you think about what he says it is pretty easy to point out in the song as the heavy synthesizers being cranked and broken up really make the song a memorable one. Not to mention the robotic voice build:
Borgore just recently came out with a much awaited EP Decisions. This is much more high paced and upbeat than the Borgore I'm used to but that in no way is a comment against the man. The new EP signifies possibly a new direction for Borgore that could catapult him into real stardom. The remixes are great but we gotta focus on the man himself with the key track:
Download Borgore Decisions (Original Mix)
I've never really listened to Big Gigantic but I've always been a big Savoy fan. So when I heard that Big Gigantic was remixing Savoy's record, "We Are the Sun", I figured I'd check it out. It's a fun mix between dubstep and drum & bass. Be sure to take advantage of the free download:
If you don't know Adventure Club, get on the VCH train and learn to recognize these guys. So much grime yet uplifting feel to their tracks that it is difficult to turn it away. Check out their most recent work in this key piece "Need Your Heart":
This next Popeska track is an easy track to like. Especially with a little Dead Prez sampling and some hip hop swagger to the dubstep:
Keeping with the hip hop influenced tracks and drug references, this latest work from Dave Dialect is a little slower paced Dubstep track that reminds me a little bit of Benga's style. Be sure to add this to your dub playlist:
Download Dave Dialect Cocaine Inside My Blunts
So as for the surprise, I've been chatting with people about the rise in popularity of Moombahton. I think it is progressively becoming a force to be reckoned with in the industry. And for that I give you a little taste into one of the fastest growing genres:
In other news, some of you may have already read Dubstep legend, Bassnectar's little write up addressing the rising controversy of 'button pushers'. If you can 10 minutes out of your day aside from reading my bland writing check out this insightful opinion:

Sound Wave Saturday
Welcome to the first official Sound Wave Saturday taking you into the weekend! I been a little bogged down the past weekends well... um... reporting the Vans Warped Tour? I went with my girlfriend... true story. I did enjoy it though! It was a pretty awesome experience to say the least, the tour has always been well renowned and now I know why. Anyways, we got a great list in store for the first week of Sound Wave for you today. A little Adam K., EDX, Swanky Tunes, Deniz Koyu, Kim Fai, Eddie Thonenick & Norman Doray, Madeon, and a classic little gift for you at the end:
Adam K has only really been on my radar screen since his record with Funkagenda "Drift". Is it a mystery? Or do I just need to do more research? Either way it could be my favorite songs on this post. Enjoy this new single "Crooks in the Kitchen":
Download Adam K Crooks In The Kitchen (Original Mix)
The italian stalion EDX has been a long time veteran on the 1's and 2's since the early 90's. He's developed his sound a profoundly since then and all of it is VCH endorsed! Enjoy his latest production "Sunset Miracles":
Here it comes! Russian House Mafia with the latest and greatest for ya! Wait... I meant Swanky Tunes & Hard Rock Sofa. They've team up for another productions and that is just the way I like them. Personally I lose my mind when the build up is more exciting than the drop but hey this post isn't about me; I'll let you the readers decide on "The Edge".
Can someone tell me why Deniz Koyu hasn't won any sort of award yet? He keeps a low profile but then releases these monsters like music is going out of style. "Tung"put this guy on a hot streak and Deniz just doesn't look like he is cooling off anytime soon. I'm a huge fan of his latest song, "Bong":
This next producer has got to be on my top 10 for sure. Kim Fai, the Toolroom knight, the Asian father, the humble but dangerous producer. Trying to find his tracks sometimes can be so damn elusive but we got a little teaser of the upcoming single "In the Night":
American bred DJ (hooah!) DJ Eddie Thoneick has joined forces with Frenchamn Norman Doray for another underground bomb. These guys are considered veterans and perhaps a little on the "elder" side of the EDM community. But for the love of god, do not hold that against them! They are amazing live! If you ever hear of them coming to your area be sure to go check them out and you can thank me later. You're ticket will be worth every penny! This duo really knows what they are doing more than most of the big names being thrown around today. Here is their latest work on Size Matters records, "Celcius":
I know I'm not the one to put up the electro house but Madeon tells me to! Or atleast I think he does. But that's what VCH is all about right? Expanding out of your nitche! After all, this little youngster is taking over the world by storm Ottoman Empire style. The kid has pure talent and it is so evident in his latest piece, "Finale":
Download Madeon Finale
Okay, I'm hoping you're house music hunger is satiated now. But if not, if you feel starved for more house to keep your hearts full and your mouth humming melodic tunes, I wanted to end on an especially blissful note. It's a classic track for sure, it's old but endless in time and oh so sweet. What a masterpiece... I part with you playing "In the Air" by Morgan Page:
Until next time,
-Ted Townsend

Funky Friday Vol. 8 feat Viceroy Teaser
Touchdown at last in Brooklyn! I have finally moved into my pad in Brooklyn and the greatest part is I am 3 blocks from the famous Brooklyn Bowl; so clutch. New York and Brooklyn have been a real strong point in America for Disco and also the rest of Electronic Dance Music (see Codes). So needless to say it wasn't tough settling down and getting inspired for this weeks' episode of Funky Friday. Let's get weird:
It's been scorching hot lately but I hope that doesn't slow you down from boogeying down. Show Le Nonsense some love here I really love this guy he's got all the talent and potential in the world:
Speaking of talent, The Knocks out with another great remix. I'm counting down the days till I get to see this act live (8 days to be exact):
Next we got a little tribute to the deep house for you. Nice little groovy tune to keep things easy:
To picks things up a bit we got a little Pleasurekraft for your assezzz. Always fun, always funky:
One of my favorite duos, Oliver, give us more reason of why they are here to stay:
What would be a funky post with our beloved funk man himself Viceroy? This teaser is sure to be the track that puts our boy over the top into disco dominance. Check it homiesss:

Mixtape Thursday: Axwell @ Sensation Innerspace, Russia
Axwell, one-third of the Swedish House Mafia brand, recently performed at Sensation Innerspace in Russia.
Let's keep the description of the set short and simple: Anthems!
Axwell keeps the energy mode in the red zone with the usual big festival anthems. Not a set to be disappointed with. Press play and get ready for the weekend!
Download Axwell Live at Sensation Innerspace Russia 06-11-2012
P/s: Here's an extra treat for you. Check out DJ M2's new tech house track. If Axwell's set was too much energy, here's something on the chill & groovy side.

Aggressively Progressive X
Ev...that musta been retarded. Retarded in the aggressive, nasty, gnarly, sexy sense. Just like this weeks APTX and yes the X represents the 10th edition of VCHxAPT. I love doing this on tuesdays because I have faith that by the middle of the day on tuesday a handful of jems will have been released. this week is no different.
It's no secret that Nothing Inside - SVD is one of my favorite tracks of the past two months. And it is also no secret that the youngen Julian Jordan goes HAM. So julian jordans remix of Nothing Inside made just too much sense. Thank you House God for Creating this.
Arty is my dude. He is skinny as fuck but he brings the Progressive House/Trance pain with some serious beats. His newest single Open Space reminds me a lot of Mozart in the best possible way.
Pixel Cheese......makes it rain. there is a certain amount of power that a Pixel Cheese Remix adds to any track. Just listen and see.
And the new Leventina jam Right or Wrong is hot. Lisen and learn to be Wrong in the Rightest way :P

The Electric Daisy Carnival Las Vegas 2012 First Hand Account + Live Sets
Entrance view of Electric Daisy Carnival Las Vegas |
So now that I have finally gathered enough brain cells to put together a blog post, I think it's time that everyone who didn't get to experience the life changer that EDC Vegas is gets to hear about it. The Electric Daisy Carnival is one of those things that someone who wasn't there can never truly understand or feel. Insomniac, the production company that puts EDC on every year, does a hell of a job making this festival unique from all other music festivals of any genre. First, the festival is from sundown to sunrise, beginning at 730 PM and ending when the sun rises at 530 AM. There is honestly nothing like the adrenaline feeling you get when you first enter the gates of EDC Vegas and gaze down from the stands upon a neon planet full of energized people, crazy light shows, multiple ferris wheels and light structures, 7 stages equipped with big booming speakers and insane lasers and lights, and the desert sky above. The venue that EDC is held at, the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, is an ideal place for a festival because the entire place is one mile-long oval with a symmetrical layout. This makes it very easy to find your friends if you get separated, easy entry and exit, etc. The festival also offers free water bottle refills which was huge. You save a ton of money not having to buy a water for 5$ repeatedly and the refills are quick so you can get back to the music. Also, the feeling and vibe you get from the crowd at EDC Vegas is unlike any feeling I've ever experienced. 200,000 people fill the venue all 3 nights and it still isn't crowded at all. There is room to dance in the first 30 rows at every stage no matter who is performing. The general attitude from the people that are there is just so positive... everyone is just trying to have a good time. That sounds cheesy but everything is just left behind and people are just straight up raging for 10 hours in a row, 3 consecutive days. With all that said, yes, Saturday of the 3 day festival was a flop, as extreme desert winds forced EDC to prematurely shut down at around 2 am. This was a huge buzzkill but Friday and Sunday were so good that I can't complain. The only way to make this weekend better (besides making the venue into a dome) would have been to have Madeon & Deadmau5 in the lineup.
The massive main stage |
There are WAY too many great sets and DJ's to name from the weekend, but I put four memorable sets below that not everyone may be talking about. These four are probably the most vivid for me looking back on the weekend. Enjoy.
Let's start with Friday. We got to EDC, and the first guy I see is Afrojack. To keep a long story short, he killed it. Enough said. The usual. When the lineup came out, I was the most excited for Kaskade. It had been a couple years since I had seen him live and there is not possibly a better way to reunite with the boss himself than at the main stage of EDC Las Vegas on the first night of the weekend. Let's just say I was also the most 'prepared' for Kaskade's set as well, so everything was just amazing right before he came on. He played an epic set full of great build ups and filthy electro drops that kept the crowd jumping for two straight hours. I can say his set was one of the highlights of my life. Check Kaskade's set out below:
Download Kaskade Electric Daisy Carnival 2012 Las Vegas (Live Set)
On Saturday, I got to the festival just in time for Bassnectar who I was pumped to see. He's a super talented live DJ which all of you may not know. He played a really good set but I think it could have been a little bit more intense. He kept it pretty melodic and easy going for his usual style. Up after that was my main man Calvin Harris, someone who I have had unconditional love for as a DJ since I heard "Flashback" in high school. I was in the zone for this set as well. He was playing an unbelievable set when.... the fucking wind stopped his set, he said some Scottish gibberish, and he ran off the stage. Frustrating. And that was the end of Saturday.
On Sunday, our group had the mindset to go HAM since we were robbed on Saturday. We arrived at the festival at 8 pm somehow. I don't know how we got out of the hotel so early but we did it. And it was for the best. The first DJ we saw was Joris Voorn, someone who I only had heard one song by before EDC. However, once we got into the Cosmic Meadow stage crowd, I was immediately overcome with soothing deep house beats that got me just straight vibing. I turned around and saw all my friends doing the same. Joris is the shit. After that I ran to to the Kinetic Field main stage to catch all of Chuckie's set, and he did not disappoint. It was an electro party. My calves got built from all the jumping I was doing during "Who is Ready to Jump". Check out his live set below:
Download Chuckie Day 3
After Chuckie was Dirty South. He rocked the main stage to say the least. I had seen Dirty South a few times before and the dude is amazing live. My best memory from this set was his remix of Miike Snow's "Devil's Work". It was honestly so massive and heavy, I felt like an electric bass wave was flowing through my body. Sounds cheesy but I swear it was real. After Dirty South came Pretty Lights, one of the headliners I had been dying to see for the last few years. Right in the beginning I heard "Hot Like Sauce", which literally just blew my brain away. I was feeelin realllll nice for this show and Pretty Lights put out a show that had the perfect amount of wobbles and bass as well as melodic dubstep. Check out his set here:
Download Pretty Lights Electric Daisy Carnival 2012 Las Vegas (Live Set)
I saw Laidback Luke after that at the Super You and Me stage which was good as expected. I had already seen him before though last year at EDC and he was better the year before. Bingo Players took the stage next and oh my god.... I cried just a little. "Mad Dash" for some reason was my favorite track of the set at the back end. Something about that song live.... crazy. Here's Bingo Players set:

Rave girls never cease to bring the flavor |
Craziest weekend of 2012 thus far. Now just got to wait about a month for Tomorrowland.... I wonder which one will be better when all is said and done.

Big Wobbles
Mr. Zilla is back with some phresh dub tunes for the rest of the week. Today, I've got tracks from 501, a relatively unheard of dubstep artist, KillSonik, a more well known dub artist and remixer, and Flux Pavillion, who we all know as a consistent force in the dubstep game (He mashed at EDC, full review on the way). Make sure you protect your ears from big bass these tracks bring, but also make sure you download all three because each track is unique dub in it's own way. Check them out...
First is 501's newest track, "Grindhouse". Be prepared for a moombahton style beat but melodic wobbles at the same time. Interesting blend of beat and wobbles in "Grindhouse" creates for a solid new track.
Next, KillSonik brings a great remix of "We'll Be Coming Back" by Calvin Harris. KillSonik keeps Calvin's classic vocals in the buildup and quickly slaps the drop hard right on you, and it goes hard. This is classic dubstep everybody.
Lastly, Flux Pavillion's remix of "Blue Skies" is pretty old, but I just came across it and it was so good I knew I had to post it. If you are a Flux fan, you know what to expect when he puts out his big room dub bangers, and "Blue Skies" is no different. Give it a good listen everybody.
Enjoy the rest of your week. I know Wompzilla will.

Sunday Sunsets
The summer is well underway. I'm trying to figure out, whose going to Ibiza this summer? It gets crazier every summer; it's the mecca for clubbing. Hopefully, I'll find myself there next August (2013) with the rest of the writers experiencing it for the first time ourselves. If any of you readers happen to be going this year and would like to share your story with the VayaConHouse blog, please write to tes1016@westminstercollege.edu and we'll be happy to put it on the site! Anyway, with Electric Daisy Carnival happening in the desert of Nevada, and festivals popping up almost every weekend, it's no surprise summer in the states seems to consist of house music everywhere. Seeing Avicii myself at the end of the month here in Salt Lake City and Kaskade next month. Plan for stellar reviews on those. For now, I'm going to give you guys the solid house tunes I love to bring yall every time I write. Today I have some Joe Garston, Tiesto, Max Vangeli, Funkagenda, Hardwell, Pete Griffiths, another Pryda tune off the newest album and an episode of Toolroom Records TV for you at the end.
Max Vangeli Podcast ft. Junior Sanchez - June 2012 - Subscribe on iTunes
Beatport #3, Joe Garston with his Xone DX making splash in today's scene of up and comers. He's a youngin' alright. And his smash single is out now. Start your listening, right here - with "Forever."
(***Author's pick of the post***) Mark Knight releases Ibiza 2012 vol. 1 finally! Here's Funkagenda's contribution to the mix. One of the best tracks I've heard in 2012 by far, when it gets to it's peak you will not regret a thing - promise you. Enjoy Funkagenda's newest tune, "FYSB."
Same mix, new DJ, another brilliant tune. Pete Griffiths with his newest track "Elara." The Beatport top 10 knows him well. He holds a residency at my all time favorite club, Ministry of Sound in London, UK. He's young and talented. Expect to hear a lot more from this guy.
Yes, I, Ted Townsend, enjoy an Afrojack tune like none other. So, when other people touch his work, you'll almost never see or hear of me touching the play button. Fortunately, Tiesto has a legendary enough reputation that I gave this remix a listen. I didn't regret it. Enough said - here's Tiesto's remix to Nick Van De Wall's "Can't Stop Me Now" ft. Shermanology.
Hardwell banger alert - tell me you don't have a grin on your face right now. Speaking of Tiesto, here's his protege with his newest release "Three Triangles."
Now, I've never been a fan of the way this guy dresses, but that initial judgement lasted about 5 minutes. When I saw him live in San Francisco - Max Vangeli's home city, I understood what good house really is. Big room kinda guy; we're all still waiting on his album "People of the Night" to release already, with his close buddy AN21. Their newest single "H8RS," currently number 5 on the Beatport chart speaks loud and clear for what we can expect from the album. Fortunately for you readers, I'm giving you the amount of Max Vangeli yall deserve. Not 1 track, not two - but an entire mix from Vangeli himself, featuring special guest Junior Sanchez. If you're new to Vangeli, definitely suscribe to his free itunes podcast. He features a guest on every episode!
Pryda may keep himself heavily underground, but when his album "Pryda" dropped the entire electronic music community was well aware. He's a genius, he makes it seem easy the way he can produce a track at the drop of a hat. Turn up the bass on this one; as usual, he maximizes. Here's Eric Prydz with "Sunburst."
That's all for today guys (and gals we hope!) Enjoy good music, thank you for reading the site, it means a ton if you're benefiting from our selections. Until next time.

ps. Enjoy TV ;)

Gabe Gandres' Deviouse House Mix
As much as the Funky Friday's try to capture that warm weather spirit we all feel at this time of year, isn't there something to said about the change of pace from day to night time (and often early mornings)? The ease of responsibilities that often come alongside summer nights leads us into more free feeling of just letting go. And what better way to do that than with house? Our main man Gabe Gandres (aka DJ Bent) whipped up a nice little 20 minute mix here with some great names on it including Sidney Samson, Tommy Sunshine & Disco Fries as well as a little bit of Gabe's own work that shows why we can see DJ Bent in the crystal ball of EDM's future (figuratively speaking) check out this mix and be sure to like his facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/gabegandres):

Funky Friday Vol. 6- DJ Sneak Special
Nothing can be much more entertaining in the modern day social media scene than an artist beef. Deadmau5 and Pauly D being the latest one brought me back to the beef between DJ Sneak and Swedish House Mafia. Now I won't stand on one side or the other of the debate in this post (that opinion coming soon with a real great on running debate). Nonetheless, DJ Sneak is undoubtedly one of the greatest figures in house music coming out of Chicago, the birthplace of house music. So I give you a special free downloadable track DJ Sneak put out amongst a bunch of other funky grooves for this Friday night:
