Laidback Luke Review

The man born in the Phillipines and raised in Holland now is the man that can proudly say he runs Dutch House music. Though we can confess that LL has gone "mainstream" that in no way means his music has faltered to cater to the masses. I believe it is only getting better with time has he continues to develope, revamp, and innovate his sound with every new release. Sure, in some ways dance music in America has tainted the original idea of the essence of dance music but I truly believe Laidback Luke continues to preserve what is right about dance music nowadays; and goddamn did he prove that at Sutton the other week.

If you didnt already know, Sutton is one of the finest clubs in all the world and its settled right here in Barcelona of the lively street Avenue Diagonal. It's chique and slender structure inside reminds you something out of a Miami nightclub circa 1970. The plush couches with the squared off tables that surround the dance floor give it a pit like feeling for when the big time dj's come through the place. This would lead to quite the crowd on the dancefloor for the man of the night.

After the chaotic and riotous line outside the club we finally got in and were able to watch the opening DJ's last 15 minutes. Much respect to him (forgot his name) for keeping the set a little reserved to not take away from LL while still getting the crowd pumped up for the big moment of the night.

So Laidback came on stage and he wasted no time getting the crowd crazy throughing down "No Beef" and then "Rattle" by Steve Aoki & Afrojack and then Bingo Players respectively. Then what was one of my highlights of the night was his crazy rendition of Dada Life's "Kick Out the Epic Motherfucker" including some killer scratching on the CDJ's (see video below). It was that moment that I'm pretty sure everyone lost it in Sutton. Luke then continued with some bangers like "Sex, Drugs, Rock & Roll" by Tommy Trash and then a great back to back mix of "Internet Friends" by Knife Party then "Antidote" by SHM and Knife Party (see below). He obviously spun plenty of his own goodness like his remix of "Give Me All Your Love", "Turbulence", and his remix of "Don't Turn Off the Lights". But he also threw in some tracks you would have never guessed to be in his set such as "Wonderwall" and "Under The Bridge". He had everyone singing along (though not exactly in harmony) and it really captured the spirit and enjoyment everyone had seeing such an amazing and eccentric talent come to Barcelona.
